"Wii 2" nicht im Jahr 2011
Reggie Fils-Aime (von Nintendo of America) sieht für das kommende Jahr keinen Bedarf an einer neuen Konsolen-Generation (Wii 2). In einem Interview mit Kotaku sagte er, dass man erst über die nächste Generation sprechen werde, wenn mehr als 45 Millionen Wii-Konsolen in den US-Haushalten stehen würden. Derzeit sind in den USA rund 30,4 Millionen Wii-Systeme über die Ladentheken gegangen; die Xbox 360 liegt bei 21,9 Mio. und die PlayStation bei 13,5 Mio.
Im Rahmen der "BMO Capital Markets 18th Annual Digital Entertainment Conference" in New York führte er fort, dass sich die Wii 23% schneller verkauft hätte als die PlayStation 2 im gleichen Zeitraum. Des Weiteren gab er zu, dass die Verkäufe im dritten Jahr leicht zurückgegangen sind, trotzdem meint er, dass die installierte Basis von 30 Millionen Konsolen durchaus für sich sprechen würde. Außerdem sei Nintendo nicht so sehr auf die Profite der Weihnachtssaison angewiesen wie die anderen beiden Hersteller.
Reggie says Wii sales peaked in the system's third full year and he proudly states that there are more than 30 million Wiis out there in America. He's got a chart - he showed it at a business conference in New York yesterday - that shows the Wii is still selling faster than the the PlayStation 2, the juggernaut of the last generation of gaming consoles, did in the same amount of time. 23% faster, he says. Wii was and is a monster hit, no doubt about it. Nintendo was right this generation despite so many people thinking they were wrong.
"As we sit here today we're saying the Wii has many, many more units to sell," he said today. "After we've reached an installed base of 45 million here in the U.S., we can have a conversation about the next generation. "
I asked Reggie the question this morning during an interview at the hotel he's using this week in Manhattan: "Wii 2 is not a must for next holiday?" His answer: "No."
