Focus Home Interactive hat Cities XL 2012 (ab 8,99€ bei kaufen) offiziell angekündigt. Die Städtebau-Simulation soll über 1.000 Gebäude und insgesamt 60 große 3D-Karten bieten - der Vorgänger umfasste knapp 700 Gebäude und 45 Karten. Die virtuellen Städtebauer sollen sich u.a. auch um Energieversorgung, Transportsystem, Handel, Erholung und Sozialdienste ihrer Stadt kümmern (erste Bilder). Des Weiteren haben die Entwickler bekannt gegeben, dass diesmal Mod-Tools fest geplant sind.

Im Oktober 2011 soll das Spiel als Standalone-Version erscheinen. Besitzer von Cities XL 2011 sollen eine Upgrade-Option zu einem reduzierten Preis angeboten bekommen.
