This readme contains additional information and last-minute changes on the game that appeared too late to be integrated into the manual. It shall also help you solving any problems you might have running Crashday properly.

It's Crashday - Enjoy!

2. INSTALLATION & SETUP

a - System Requirements

Before attempting to install Crashday, please verify that your computer meets the minimum requirements listed below.

Minimum requirements:
Processor: 1.5 Ghz
Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP
Memory: 512 MB RAM
DVD-ROM Drive: X6
Harddisk Space: 1 GB
Video: 64MB DirectX 8.1 compatible graphics card (GeForce 3/Radeon 8500/similar with pixel shader and vertex shader support)
Audio: DirectX compatible sound card
Direct X 9.0c (included on DVD)

To run Crashday in highest detail settings and high framerate, please verify that your computer meets the recommended requirements listed below.

Recommended requirements:
Processor: 2.5 Ghz
Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP
Memory: 1024 MB RAM
DVD-ROM Drive: X6
Harddisk Space: 1 GB
Video: 256MB DirectX 9.0 compatible graphics card
Audio: DirectX compatible sound card
Direct X 9.0c (included on DVD)

Please guarantee, that all other applications (especially CPU and memory consuming real-time or graphics applications, anti-virus software or other games) are being closed prior to launching the game to guarantee for a maximum of performance.

TIP: If your computer is equipped with only 512 MB of RAM and it has been running since a long time, restarting your computer can often free up some system memory.

b - Installing the Game

1. Insert the DVD of Crashday into your DVD-ROM Drive.
2. If Autoplay is enabled on your system, the setup of Crashday will launch automatically. If nothing happens after inserting the DVD into the drive, click on "My Computer", double-click on the DVD-ROM drive icon, then double-click on "Setup". Setup will now be launched.
3. Once setup is running, follow the on-screen instructions.

In order to play back videos properly, you will need to have the Windows Media Player 9 codecs installed. These codecs will automatically be installed during setup. If you experience problems playing back videos, please refer to the troubleshooting section.

c - Starting the Game

1. Insert the Crashday Disc into your DVD-Rom Drive.
2. If you answered "Yes" when the installer asked you whether you wanted to create a desktop shortcut, double click on the desktop shortcut to launch Crashday.
If you did not create a desktop shortcut, click on the Start Menu, then select "Programs" (or "All Programs" in Windows XP), then select "Atari", then "Crashday", then click on the "Crashday" icon to launch Crashday.

d - Default Control Assignments

The default key control assignments are listed below. To reassign them, start the game, go to "Options" and then "Controls".

Spacebar - Handbrake
V - Use nitro
B - Fire minigun
N - Fire missile
C - Change camera view
R - Recover vehicle
Tab - Look back
H - Use horn
X - Send chat message
Page down - External camera
Delete - "Freeze mode"

3. TROUBLESHOOTING

a - Performance Tips

To adjust the graphics setup, start the game, go to "Options" and then "Graphics".

CPU speed and/or graphics card:
old configuration - "very low" to "medium" detail setup
medium configuration - "medium" to "high" detail setup
high end configuration - "very high" detail setup

Graphics card memory:
64 MB - use "low" or "medium" textures
128 MB - use "medium" or "best" textures
256 MB - use "best" textures

TIP: If you are running on a low memory system with 512MB RAM and you are experience strong interruptions during gameplay, reducing texture resolution by one level can help improving performance.

TIP: Reducing the screen resolution always improves the general framerate. On low memory graphics cards this can also free up more graphics card memory to allow for higher resolution textures.

TIP: Sound costs a significant amount of computation time in Crashday; especially if your computer is equipped with an onboard sound chip. If you experience heavy performance problems, turning off sound can help improving the performance (not recommended for gameplay quality).

b - Graphics Issues

Outdated or incorrect video drivers are the cause of the majority of video issues. Before contacting support, ensure you have the latest production (release) drivers for your video card.

* ATI Technologies (http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html)
* NVIDIA (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp)

Crashday requires at least a DirectX 8.1 graphics card with vertex and pixel shader support to run. Some graphics cards do not meet these requirements even though they might have the required video memory available. Here is a non-exhaustive list of video cards that are not supported:

Intel 82810 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82815 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82830M Integrated Graphics
Intel 82845G Integrated Graphics
Intel 82852 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82855 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82915G GMA 900 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82910GL GMA 900 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82915GV GMA 900 Integrated Graphics
Intel 82855GM Extreme Graphics 2
Intel 82865G Extreme Graphics 2
Intel 82865GV Extreme Graphics 2
Matrox P750
Matrox Parhelia
Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS Express Integrated Graphics
Mobile Intel 910GML Express Integrated Graphics
Nvidia GeForce 4 MX 440
Nvidia GeForce 4 420 Go
Nvidia GeForce 4 440 Go
Nvidia GeForce 4 460 Go
SiS Xabre series video cards
XGI Volari V3 series video cards
XGI Volari V8 series video cards

Graphical issues were noticed in the menu interfaces on very few graphics cards. Flickering grey triangles or a "foggy" blueish appearance were being observed. These effects only happened on the first run of Crashday before driving the first race. These issues did not come up again until the graphics card was removed from the motherboard and plugged back in.

c - Network Issues

"I cannot play multiplayer mode at all."

- If you are using an Internet firewall (such as the default software firewall of Windows XP), please verify that either the application executable (.exe file) or the port numbers used by the game are enabled for incoming and outgoing connections.

"Other players cannot join my games."

- If you are connected to the Internet through a router from inside a local network, please verify that the router properly forwards incoming messages to your computer. For some routers it is required to configure "port forwarding" to redirect the ports used by the game to your local computer's IP address. Please consult your router manual how to set up port forwarding. If incoming requests are blocked or not forwarded properly, other players might not be able to join your games.

To find out which port numbers are used by Crashday, start the game, go to "Multiplayer", then go to "Network Settings".

d - Other Issues

"The game does not start." / "I cannot play back to game intro videos."

- If you experience that no videos are played back at game start-up, please make sure that the Windows Media Player 9 codecs are installed properly. If you cannot identify the problem, repeat installation of Crashday and make sure the Windows Media Player 9 codec installation during setup succeeds. If a reinstall does not solve the problem, right-click on the desktop shortcut of Crashday or right-click on the start menu entry of the Crashday application, then select "Properties" on the context menu, then select tab "Shortcut", then click on the "Link target" field and, at the end of the line, add the parameter "-skipvideo" to skip any videos.

Example: "C:\Program Files\Atari\Crashday\Crashday.exe -skipvideo"
