Die internationale "Experten-Jury" hat aus insgesamt 140 Einreichungen die Nominierungen für die gamescom awards 2014 bekannt gegeben. Die Preisverleihung inkl. der Bekanntgabe der Sieger in den Kategorien findet am 15. August 2014, ab 18:00 Uhr auf der "Let's play meets gamescom Bühne" statt.

Warum weder The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt noch Dragon Age: Inquisition in der Rollenspiel-Kategorie auftauchen und Strategiespiele à la Civilization Beyond Earth völlig fehlen, bleibt wohl ein Geheimnis. Entweder haben die Hersteller ihre Spiele nicht für den Wettbewerb eingereicht oder die "Experten-Jury" hat den Titel nicht nominiert. Wenn ein Spiel einmal nominiert wurde, darf es im kommenden Jahr nicht erneut aufgestellt werden.

Mit der Nominierung der Produkte beginnt in wenigen Tagen auch das Rennen um den ersten Platz in der neuen Kategorie "gamescom most wanted consumer award", eine Auszeichnung, die ausschließlich von Konsumenten vergeben wird. Ab dem 9. August können interessierte Spieler für ihre Favoriten auf der gamescom-facebook-Seite stimmen. Zusätzlich sind auf der gamescom selbst - unter anderem in der Halle 10.2 - Stationen mit mobilen Endgeräten und einem Voting-Tool zu finden.
