Competition time

Chaos, Yoda, KB, Wayfinder and Ryg of Farbrausch present: Bonzaj/Plastic. This is just one great party picture which you can find over at Slengpung.

What's the most important thing of a demoparty? Enough beer? The atmosphere? Quality meals? That stuff is not unimportant, but most likely it's the competitions that electrify people. And for this, Evoke offered quite a lot: JCO, for example, won two music competitions (Mp3/Ogg and Multichannel). Xenusion managed to win the Pixeled graphics competition with his still "Oracle" and the Wild demo compo was won my the terrifically staged stop-motion-movie "Freilandeier" by 5711 -  showing two eggs on the run.

The 64k intro competition had 5 entries. The group Kakiarts won the competition with their "Rastro" thanks to an intersting rendering technique and some pretty good effect ideas. It was quite surprising to see such a production from a group which hadn't been too strong before. A vast number - 9 entries - were shown in the 4k intro competition.  Calodox managed to get up to the winner's rostrum with their intro called "Anorgatronikum". This entry threw a fully wireframed lookto the bigscreen, all lines had interesting lightnings and colors - Tron at it's best. Not only thanks to this entry, it didn't matter that the 4k intro competition was delayed a full 7 hours. Such delays simply belong to every good demoparty and the it gives the origanizers a chance to say a few funny statements about it.

Naturally, the demo competition was the inevitable highlight. 14 entries competed, with the polish group Plastic managing to defer all the whole concurrence to the lower ranks, just like at Breakpoint. Their masterpiece "Final Audition" certainly lets almost all other productions of this year look like old carding when it comes to the technology used. Despite the object and detail overkill, I liked the production a lot. Still, the design and music showed some room for improvement. With "Yab3dfd", Smash Designs reached the second place. With their typical style, they let a camera move around finely textured 3d scenarios. Still, there were other parts which unfortunately were not shown long enough. Among them, a kind of laser cinema as you can find in the "Europa Park".

Final Audition from Plastic has won the demo competition at Evoke 2005.
Bronze medal went to "Perfect Love" by LKCC, which is, in my opinion, the best demo of the compo. Graphic artist and designer Pixture pulled out all the stops with this masterwork. The variety of colors and abstractness of objects impart a fascinating visual rush, while Sire's masterpiece of an electro soundtrack pound out of the loudspeakers. Yet, Fabrausch's entry was disappointment. Their fourth ranking "fr-046: basso continuo" showed that their gfx artist CP can make music too, rather than that it convinceing us of new ideas. It's just another typical .werkkzeug demo, like other Farbrausch visual artists have done before en masse. Also, the second Farbrausch demo was rather disappointing. "fr-047: malpasset" was more of a slideshow than anything else. An atmospheric, but rather lifeless experiment.

The Upshot
It was an amazing event, the organizers used all their motivation skills and effort to keep up the good mood of the slobbering demo pack (there were about 300 people). Coffee and mineral water was free, public terminals were provided for visitors without own computer so as to check their mail. All the toilets were clean, and so was the whole partyplace. The cathering service cared for adequate victuals and the fact that there were so many outstanding releases draws the crown up for the event. By the way, Demoscene.tv was broadcasting nonstop live from the partyplace. For my part, I'll be at Vulkanhalle again!
