Spielkultur | Special | 4Sceners

The demo competition will start in a few seconds. The crowd is now waiting for this big moment in front of the bigscreen.
After leafing trough the magazine, I was slightly disappointed: I had submitted an article to SCEEN, but it was not printed. As I heard later, when Tobi introduced me to a certain Hakan Toepper, one of the publishers of SCEEN, they wanted the topic to be covered with wider scope and investigated further. Hakan turned out to be a extremly kind guy with interesting visions and opinions. It was he who some time later introduced me to the main editor, Alexander Scholz. Alex and I had been working together since some years, but never met in person throughout all that time. Evoke brings people together.

Somehow I imagined that Alex was taller, not like the lanky guy who, nevertheless, is a live wire full of energy and beans.  We spent a lot of time together troughout the remaining two days and had many stimulated discussions. In front of the bigscreen, and together with Hakan, we enjoyed the mostly impressive visuals and musics of the presented demos and intros. There, however, is one phenomenon which really speaks for Alex. No matter how much beer he consumed and no matter how shaky he walks: Once you start speaking about his baby SCEEN, he becomes quite professional and even euphoric - in a way that he could, despite his state, get sponsors. His presentation of SCEEN on the stage, given to much applause, was the living proof.

I know that guy!
On my ramble trough the atmospheric halls of space station Evoke, I met a lof of old friends. Ghandy, main editor of Jurassic Pack and an institution of the scene was one of them. Of course, as a die-hard Amiga scener, he brought his classic computer and we enjoyed a journey into the impressive world of Amiga demos on it. With the guys from Moods Plateau we had interesting discussions too - specifically about a soon-to-be-launched cooperation. The most surprising encounter, however, was to meet Noname/Haujobb at Evoke. He developed an Amiga demo for my previous web project Back2roots.org and I hadn't met him in three years. As he told me, he's not studying in Nottingham, England and was visting

The Vulkanhalle in the center of Cologne is a perfect and beautiful party location.
Germany to enjoy this cool scene event.

Of course, there were masses of scene VIPs around in the Cologne space port. No matter whether Chaos, Ryg or KB from Farbrausch, Bonzaj or Xenusion from Plastic, the legendary Irata of TRSI, or Scamp/Vacuum - the main organizer of Breakpoint - they all had a lot of fun in Cologne, just like the surprisingly large number of girls at the party. Since the weather was sunny too, people were hanging around outside the party hall on Saturday afternoon, having good discussions and a beer here and there. Inside, some sceners where actively chatting, coding or any other rag they could do on the computers they had brought. In the sleeping corner, you could relieve yourself of all the stress and strains - but only if you could ignore the neighboring party roar. In the sleeping corner you could also find the installation "The 10th Room", a project developed by sceners who wanted to sound the possibilities of interactive cinematic. By using joypads you could move various cursors along a screen - and once two cursors collied, a short video clip was played.
